Elk Grove is a city in Sacramento County, California, located just south of the state capital of Sacramento. It is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2012, the population of the city is 155,937. The second-largest city in Sacramento County, Elk Grove earned the title of the fastest growing city in the U.S between July 1, 2004 and July 1, 2005.
Elk Grove and its outlining areas were rich in plant and animal life, and it was common for indigenous people to supplement their acorn diet with edible roots and fish from nearby rivers, such as the American River, Sacramento River and the Cosumnes River.
Elk Grove boasts numerous events that are fun and exciting for all ages. The most notable event in Elk Grove is the annual Giant Pumpkin Festival that is held the first weekend of October at the Elk Grove Regional Park. The Giant Pumpkin Festival attracts many thousands of guests each year. Guests are welcome to enjoy the Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off, Pumpkin Regatta, pumpkin food, merchandise and craft vendors, entertainment, children’s activities and more.
The City of Elk Grove incorporated on July 1, 2000. It is a general law city and operates on the Manager-City Council type of governance. Beginning in 2012, voters elect the Mayor directly for a two year term, along with four council members. Prior to 2012, The mayor's position was a one-year term and was chosen at-large by the city council. The first directly elected Mayor of Elk Grove on November 6, 2012 is Gary Davis. The remaining councilmembers are James Cooper (District 1), Pat Hume (District 2), Steve Detrick (District 3) and Vacant (District 4).
